Halloween/ Fall Colors Tie Dye Shirts

IMG_0815
LAst week I bought this Tie Dye kit at Michaels for the girls. It was super easy and they turned out really cute! It costs $10.00 but I got it on sale for $5.00

It comes with the dye and some black and glow in the dark fabric paint as well. There are lots of styles you can make and ideas inside. I let the girls squirt the dye on their shirts

We let them set for 24 hrs

but unfortunately the first attempt didn’t work so well. I just tied them back up and made sure to add dye in all the folds

Then the next day we opened them to reveal GORGEOUS HaLlOwEeN/ Fall Tie Dye shirts. Since the black looks a little brown and Fall color-ish, I opted not to add the Jack o Lantern Face so they can be worn through Thanksgiving as well. We might do another one with the spider or pumpkin!

Fun Friday Collage Birds (one day project)

Yesterday I did a simple one day project with 1st and Second grade.
We talked about different birds and their different habitats.

We started with a huge pile of scrap paper. I use the Tru Ray Construction paper.

The only instructions I gave them were to start with a circle for the head, then an oval for the body, an oval for the wing, a long or short triangle for the beak, and then a long strip of paper for the tail feathers. I showed them how to add more feathers with more strips of different colored paper. They had to come up with something on their own for the legs. And of course you need some really awesome googly eyes!!
Here are the results

They all looked so different and the kids really enjoyed creating their own special bird! We talked about where it lived at the end of class and they were so excited making their birds talk to each other. I love when a project gets them so excited and inspires imaginative play!

Marshmallow Caterpillars and Emergent Curriculum

Today a few of my first graders brought in (from home) two jars full of caterpillars, cocoons, and butterflies! OF course I had to throw out my salt painting lesson plan and bust out the marshmallows for caterpillars!

I have never seen a butterfly quite like these. They had reflective silver spots! The kids were so excited!

Bust out the Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and talk about all of our FAVORITE foods!

I even got to use my favorite google eyes I got at Michael's last weekend in the Halloween section!

This student even made his a chrysalis!
