My Student Prodigy

Ok, I have to write about this special child that I get to teach. When I first got to the school that I am at now, his teacher came to me the first day of school and said…”One of my second grade students drew this, look out for him, you will know who he is, nurture his talent.” When I connected who he was I was in complete amazement at his giftedness. Have you ever had a student like this? If so, tell me about it. This student was painting on a high school/college level in second grade. He is in fourth grade now. This is his latest piece which he drew entirely free hand and painted with watercolor titled “Dreaming Awake” that he completed this week. He can paint for 5-6 hours straight with no break and he is only 10 yrs old! He is that kid that all the other kids want to sit by and call their best friend because he just has a magnetic sweet selfless personality. I LOVE teaching art!

  1. Wow in this modern world why cant he be sent to school? I teach art at a government school in Australia - education is free for all children-

  2. He does go to school. He just doesn't have any extracurricular art lessons besides mine. There aren't too many art schools here that aren't extremely expensive and far from us.

  4. Oh my goodness, this took my breath away! I haven't had a student who's produced such high caliber art, but I do know what you mean about the kid who has the magnetic personality. Thanks for sharing his art, I'm certain he'll end up succesful and you'll be saying you "knew him when..." Very touching story.

  5. He really is amazing. I had a student like that a few years ago. She was in second grade and could replicate the examples I made for class exactly. It was incredible. I tried to talk to her parents about her skill, they were both designers, but they seemed to take her talent for granted. It was a shame. I used to have her come in to the art room whenever she wanted.
