Spring Show (continued)

I am convinced that I work in a district with the most talented genius art teachers in the world! These images are from Middle and High Schools in my district! They were displayed at the 2010 Spring Show. I spent hours looking at all the art trying to figure out how they did that mostly! Every piece is amazing and unique. The way these teachers are able to teach kids to express themselves in such individual and creative ways, is just incredible to me! I LOVE my job! Enjoy the ART!

3rd Grade Pharaoh Masks

Students are creating pharaoh masks, with their own style and personal design.

We learned ALL about King Tut and his completely intact tomb discovered by archeologists.

Students get REALLY hyped when they find out we are learning about mummies!

-first they draw with Oil Pastels

-then use metallic tempera to paint

I REALLY like to emphasize the parts of the eye with EVERY project

1. Iris

2. Pupil

3. Reflection of light

I do it with kinder through fifth. They all look around at their neighbor to see the shiny dot on their eyes from the light.

We also talk about how the bottom lip is always lighter because it sticks out and catches light.

When the painting is finished, the next class period we use oil pastels to add details and shading.

Each students picks their favorite animal to put at the top.

One 4th grade class started their Pharaoh masks with Papier mache’

And I am quickly reminded of why I haven't done this in so long….34 kids….10 buckets of glue….all over their hands….and MY clothes…and then making space to store them all!

Ode to Oil Pastels

Oil Pastel, Oh Oil Pastel, sometimes you’re messy, but at least you never smell!
Crayons and markers are dull and flat, but you are so bright and are anything but THAT!

You can transform a drawing from boring to bright, a colorful sunset in the darkest of night.
You make a BIG mess when you fall on the floor,
but its worth their proud smiles holding their masterpiece when they walk out the door!
You finish so bold, and make paintings look so fine
if they painted it sloppy don’t fret, just outline!!

I can teach analogous colors,

Value,

blending, shading,

and light,
all with your colors, so smooth, bold, and bright!

Adding details with you makes anything smoother and better, if you were a chocolate, Dove might be sending you a letter!


With 28 hexagonally shaped colors, of every shade and hue,
the crayola box is my choice when I buy you.
I make the kids save every tiny piece like its gold, and when we run out, the vender better not back order or put me on hold!
If art was a show, you would be my Main Feature,
I just want you to know, that you are adored by this teacher!!

Marbleizing with Shaving Cream

Kids LOVE shaving cream!! This project is extremely fun with beautiful results.

Begin with some shaving cream for each table,

some Sargents liquid watercolors

-place a large blob of shaving cream (big enough for the paper)

- let one student at a time squeeze just a few drips of 4-5 colors directly on the shaving cream

-use the back end of a paintbrush to swirl up the paint on the surface of the shaving cream until it is swily and marbleized looking (don’t overdo it or it will start to look muddy

-place the paper on the shaving cream

-use a pice of cardboard or styraphom to scrape the shaving cream off the paper and VOILA

you will have a beautiful print of your unique swirl design!

-then let students use markers and/or oil pastels to create their swirl into something creative
