Today the 3rd graders used the texture plates to make crayon texture rubbings for their turkey tail feathers. Texture=Turkey=Texturkey

Blow Paint Turkeys 2nd and 3rd Grade

My daughters have been really into blowing paint drips to create beautiful paintings lately. Friday I came up with a fun idea to make turkeys with blow paint feathers.

We started with construction paper to make the turkey and used watered down tempera for the drippy paint. The students could decorate the backgrounds if they finished early. This was a one day project.

Fifth grade is making drippy paint creatures with cool colors, I will post more later. They are turning out quite fabulous like this Eagle landing on a branch!!

Watercolor Family Paintings

Our 2nd Graders have been working on these beautiful Family Portraits. We have been talking about families, and it has been great to learn about all of my new students' special families! The students were encouraged to add details to each person that reflect their personalities, hobbies, special interests.

A great artist to study for this lesson is Carmen Lomas Garza. She is a narrative artist who creates paintings based on every day events in the lives of  Mexican Americans based on her experiences in Texas and California.

We used liquid watercolor for the sky and pan watercolors for the rest

 Students learned how to make the horizon line and overlap people to show perspective

Skellies for Dia De Los Muertos

We decorated the Skellies with flowers using neon paper.. Here is a draw-a-long we did for a simple rose

Sneak Peek

   I am so excited about our new Kindergarten and First grade project! They will get to dress up for a FUN picture, design their own Hot Air Balloon and paint a beautiful watercolor, sunset sky!!

2nd and 3rd grade Grunge Tigers!

With 2nd and 3rd grade I wanted to start with something really fun, bold and new. My girls LOVE letting their paint drip and watching it trail along the paper making colorful lines. I decided to do something using this idea!

 I have done neon tigers before but not quite like this.  I let the students choose which animal was their favorite before we started and they chose tigers! We started with viewing lots of images of tigers from books. We talked about and examined the stripe patterns in different kind of tigers. Then we drew them first with black crayon and painted with black paint to make bold dark stripes. 

Students used neon paint and I started my example like this. On top of the nose. I only gave them pink, blue, and yellow (primary colors) I told them to paint a large yellow a stripe across the nose and then a blue one above it, blend in the middle so that all three colors are showing. I made sure to tell them that when they mixed the colors not to cover the original color so that the tiger has many many colors when its done.

I gave them tracers for decorations or they could make their own

Splatter/ dripping stations were set up on one side of each table so they wouldn't splatter paint the people across from them 

They tap the brush with their finger, NOT fling with the wrist/arm!
